Before he became one of the most respected independent wrestlers of his generation, Chris Hero made a little-known appearance at Backyard Fest 3, one of the landmark supershows of the early backyard wrestling era.
Backyard Fest was among the first events to bring together wrestlers from multiple promotions and regions, helping lay the foundation for the supershow culture that would define the community for years to come.
As Hero recalled years later:
"In the summer of '98, when I was training, before I had my first match, I found out about GEW (Garbage Everywhere Wrestling) online. I reached out to them about having a match on one of their shows. I had NO clue what backyard wrestling was at the time & didn't realize it was pseudo-taboo. I had 2 'matches' for GEW that summer. We kept in touch loosely & in the summer of 2000, GEW booked me to appear on Backyard Fest."
